Make Time for Yourself During the Holidays
The Thanksgiving holiday has officially come and gone, and now it's time to focus on our own wellness. It's easy to get swept up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and forget to take care of ourselves, but with a few intentional steps, we can prioritize ourselves and make time for our own wellness.
Make making time a priority
After the holiday rush, it's important to take a moment to rest and rejuvenate. Whether it's taking a relaxing bath, reading a book, or practicing meditation, make time to make yourself a priority. Set aside time each day to nourish your mind and body, and don't let other obligations get in the way.
Move your body
Physical activity isn't just for our bodies - it's essential for our brain health too. Incorporate movement into your daily routine, whether it's going for a walk, taking a fitness class, or doing some yoga. Moving your body increases blood flow, promotes neural plasticity, and improves mood.
Fuel your body with nutritious foods
After a weekend of indulgences, it's important to refocus on nourishing our bodies with wholesome foods. Incorporate lean proteins, healthy fats, and colorful fruits and vegetables into your meals. Don't forget to drink plenty of water too. By fueling your body with nutritious foods, you'll feel energized and ready to take on the day.
Prioritize sleep
Sleep plays a crucial role in our brain health and physical well-being. It's during this time that our brains remove waste and consolidate memories. Prioritize sleep by establishing a bedtime routine, creating a comfortable sleep environment, and avoiding electronic screens for at least an hour before bedtime. Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night for optimal brain health.
Connect with others
Human connection is essential for our brain health, so make time to connect with loved ones and community. Whether it's joining a book club, having a call with a family member, or attending a social event, seek out opportunities to connect with others and distract your brain from holiday stressors.
As we move through the holiday season and into the new year, let's make a commitment to ourselves. Let's prioritize our own wellness, make time for our health, and inspire others to do the same. Remember, taking care of ourselves benefits not only our own well-being, but also those around us. By prioritizing our brain health and making time for our own wellness, we set an example for others to do the same.
